Embroidered 4" patch representing mission number 1 of the Space Shuttle program.
Launched on April 12, 1981, STS-1 marked a pivotal milestone in aerospace history as the first orbital flight of NASA's Space Shuttle program. Crewed by Commander John Young and Pilot Robert Crippen, the mission utilized the orbiter Columbia to prove that a reusable spacecraft could launch like a rocket and land like a glider. Unlike previous crewed programs, this was the first time a spacecraft was flown on its maiden voyage without prior uncrewed orbital testing. Over the course of its 54-hour mission, Columbia circled the Earth 36 times, successfully testing the vehicle’s thermal protection tiles and mechanical systems despite losing a few non-critical tiles during ascent. The mission concluded with a perfect touchdown at Edwards Air Force Base, ushering in a new era of frequent access to space and complex orbital operations.
