"Considered by many to be the best American-built fighter of WWII, the P-51 was the only fighter with range enough to escort and protect Allied bombers all the wat to the deepest targets and back. Designed and built in only 117 days in 1940, the Mustang was, at first, a mediocre performer, but a change to the Rolls-Royce/Packard Merlin engine transformed it into a world-class fighter. A total of 15,586 Mustangs were built and many served third-world airforces as front-line fighters into the 1960's."
