Captain Charles E. McGee Signed and Numbered Print

Brigadier General Charles Edward McGee, born on December 7, 1919, and passing away on January 16, 2022, left an indelible mark as an American fighter pilot. A trailblazer, he stood among the first African American aviators in the United States military and held the distinction of being one of the last surviving members of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Commencing his career during World War II, McGee soared through the skies with the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of all African American military pilots navigating through an era of segregation within the armed forces. Over his impressive 30-year military aviation journey, McGee undertook 409 combat missions spanning World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

In recognition of his dedicated service, McGee was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross adorned with two oak leaf clusters, the Bronze Star Medal, and numerous other military accolades. The year 2007 marked a significant milestone for McGee as he, along with his fellow Tuskegee Airmen, was bestowed with the Congressional Gold Medal. Further cementing his legacy, he was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2011. Notably, in February 2020, McGee achieved the rank of brigadier general, a well-deserved promotion from colonel, underscoring his enduring contributions to the field of military aviation.
