The Ninth Air Force (9th AF) was a major tactical air force of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, playing a crucial role in support of ground operations in the European Theater. Initially activated in 1942 and first operating in North Africa and the Mediterranean, it later moved to England to prepare for the invasion of France. In the months leading up to and following D-Day, Ninth Air Force provided close air support, interdiction, and air superiority for Allied ground forces, attacking rail lines, bridges, supply depots, and enemy troop concentrations. Flying medium bombers, fighter-bombers, and transport aircraft, it worked closely with Allied armies as they advanced across France, Belgium, and into Germany. Its flexibility and close coordination with ground commanders made Ninth Air Force a key component of the Allied victory in Western Europe.
