The Third Air Force (3rd AF) was a key numbered air force of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, activated in 1941 and headquartered in the southeastern United States. Originally assigned to provide air defense for the Gulf Coast and southern regions, it quickly shifted to a primary role as a training command.
