U.S.A.A.F. Co-Pilot, 1942-45
Experience the perilous life of a World War II heavy bomber crew with this figure of a U.S.A.A.F. Co-Pilot. Serving as a co-pilot on a U.S. Army Air Force bomber during the height of WWII was still fraught with danger, but comparatively less so than other positions. Among the 100,000 service members who crewed these bombers, a staggering 71 percent were either killed, wounded, captured, or went missing in action. The co-pilot, however, faced a lower casualty rate of 6.6 percent. Trained and rated as a full pilot, the co-pilot was familiar with all the duties of the Bomber Captain and could take over at any moment. This role was crucial, especially considering the 8 percent casualty rate of the captains.
