Operation Iraqi Freedom was the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq that began on March 20, 2003. The primary objective was to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, whom the coalition accused of possessing weapons of mass destruction and supporting terrorism. The invasion quickly toppled Hussein's regime, but no WMDs were found, leading to controversy and criticism. The operation transitioned into a protracted conflict involving insurgency, sectarian violence, and efforts to establish a stable, democratic government in Iraq. It officially ended in December 2011, but the U.S. continued to support Iraq in combating terrorism and rebuilding its institutions.
