Description
Embroidered 4-inch patch representing STS-107, the 113th flight in the STS program and the final flight of space shuttle Columbia.
STS-107, launched on January 16, 2003, was a dedicated science and research mission involving the orbiter Columbia. Unlike many contemporary missions focused on International Space Station assembly, STS-107 carried the SPACEHAB double module, housing over 80 experiments across disciplines such as biology, fluid physics, and material science. The diverse seven-member crew, which included Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli astronaut, worked around the clock in two shifts to maximize scientific output. Tragically, the mission ended in disaster on February 1, 2003, when Columbia disintegrated during reentry over Texas and Louisiana, just 16 minutes before its scheduled landing.
The subsequent investigation revealed that a piece of insulating foam had broken off the external tank during launch and struck the left wing’s leading edge, creating a hole that allowed superheated atmospheric gases to penetrate the wing structure during reentry. This loss led to a second major grounding of the shuttle fleet and ultimately influenced the decision to retire the program following the completion of the ISS.
