Paul Warfield Tibbets Jr. (23 February 1915 – 1 November 2007) was a U.S. Air Force brigadier general known for piloting the B-29 Superfortress, Enola Gay, during the historic drop of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Enlisting in 1937, Tibbets flew anti-submarine patrols after Pearl Harbor. He commanded the 340th Bombardment Squadron and later led the first American daylight heavy bomber mission in Europe. After 43 combat missions, he contributed to the development of the B-29. Appointed commander of the 509th Composite Group, he orchestrated the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Post-war, Tibbets played roles in nuclear tests and B-47 Stratojet development. Leaving the Air Force in 1966, he served in civilian aviation until his retirement in 1987.
