Description

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, a prominent World War II-era fighter aircraft produced by Republic Aviation, operated from 1941 to 1945. It excelled as a high-altitude fighter and as a leading American fighter-bomber for ground attacks. Armed with eight .50-caliber machine guns and capable of carrying 5-inch rockets or a 2,500 lb bomb load, it weighed up to 8 tons fully loaded, making it one of the heaviest fighters of the war. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, it featured an advanced turbosupercharger system for high-altitude dominance. The P-47 served with distinction in Europe and the Pacific, earning its "Jug" nickname for its distinctive appearance. Its durability and firepower made it a key aircraft for the United States Army Air Forces and Allied forces, with Mexican and Brazilian squadrons also flying it. Today's Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II takes its name from this iconic aircraft.

Doug Kinsley created Aviation Illustrations in 1989. Having drawn airplanes since he was a young boy with no formal art training, his love of airplanes has enabled him to draw in such detail that one would have to take a second look. Each drawing is thoroughly researched to insure historical accuracy with unmated detail often taking up to 500 hours to complete.
