Description

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, a prominent fighter aircraft of World War II, operated from 1941 to 1945. It excelled as a high-altitude fighter and a leading American fighter-bomber. Armed with eight .50-caliber machine guns and the ability to carry 5-inch rockets or a 2,500 lb bomb load, it was among the war's heaviest fighters. Its Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine and advanced turbosupercharger ensured high-altitude superiority. The P-47, nicknamed "Jug" for its unique appearance, served with distinction in Europe and the Pacific, prized for durability and firepower. It played a vital role for the US Army Air Forces and Allied nations, including Mexican and Brazilian squadrons. The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, a modern-day aircraft, pays homage to this iconic plane.

Doug Kinsley created Aviation Illustrations in 1989. Having drawn airplanes since he was a young boy with no formal art training, his love of airplanes has enabled him to draw in such detail that one would have to take a second look. Each drawing is thoroughly researched to insure historical accuracy with unmated detail often taking up to 500 hours to complete.
