Captain Joe Engle Signed & Numbered Print
Joe Henry Engle, born on August 26, 1932, is an accomplished American pilot, aeronautical engineer, and former NASA astronaut. Renowned for his remarkable career, Engle served as the commander for two Space Shuttle missions, including the notable STS-2 in 1981, marking the program's second orbital flight. Additionally, he piloted two flights during the Shuttle program's 1977 Approach and Landing Tests.
Engle holds the distinction of being one of the twelve skilled pilots who navigated the North American X-15, an experimental spaceplane jointly operated by the Air Force and NASA. As an X-15 pilot, he achieved the significant milestone of completing three flights above 50 miles, earning him astronaut wings according to the American convention for the boundary of space.
In 1966, Engle's expertise led to his selection as part of NASA's 5th Astronaut Group, where he actively contributed to the Apollo program. Although initially designated as the backup Lunar Module Pilot (LMP) for Apollo 14, and later scheduled as the LMP for Apollo 17, the cancellation of subsequent flights led to the selection of geologist-astronaut Harrison Schmitt as LMP, displacing Engle from the role.
Notably, Joe Henry Engle is recognized as an experienced spaceplane operator, holding the distinction of being the last living X-15 pilot, adding a unique and enduring legacy to his illustrious career.
