The "Ruptured Duck" was the nickname for a B-25 bomber piloted by Lt. Ted Lawson during the famous Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in April 1942. The plane earned its name after sustaining damage during a training accident, which left it looking as though its insignia, a painted duck, was "ruptured." The Doolittle Raid was a crucial morale-boosting mission early in World War II, as it demonstrated that the U.S. could strike the Japanese mainland after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
