During World War II, the United States Army Air Force (U.S.A.A.F.) was under the command of the army, yet it grew to become the most powerful military aviation service in the world. Unlike its Axis adversaries, American crews and pilots were rotated out after completing their tours. They often returned to training units, where they passed on their invaluable experience. This meticulous and prudent instructional system ensured that the rapidly expanding air force was supplied with well-trained and disciplined airmen.
